Part of this year's employee training on fire safety was the practical exercise of fire fighting with the fire trainer (i. e., a device for fire simulation).
In an introductory seminar, an in-house fire protection officer provided the necessary expertise on the correct use of fire extinguishers to all staff members of DAR within the scope of an introductory seminar. Afterward, the staff members, divided into groups, executed the practical part in the courtyard.
For most DAR employees, this was the first use of a fire extinguisher, a situation that can be unsettling and cost crucial seconds in case of emergency. Fire drills represent an opportunity for DAR employees to practice and internalize handling a fire extinguisher.
A gas fire simulation was also part of the practical exercise. CO2 or water extinguishers are typical protection devices for this type of fire. The training group achieved a safe fire extinction despite neither extinguishing technology being optimal for a gas fire category. The exercise also revealed different extinguishing properties (cooling/asphyxiation).
It is, of course, hoped that these skills will not be necessary if a fire occurs, but the DAR staff is now well prepared in case of one.
